14th Annual Community Earth Day Celebration set for April 19 in BG

April is Earth Month and multiple agencies are collaborating throughout Wood County to provide events geared toward conservation, education and family fun.

The 14th Annual Community Earth Day Celebration will be the culminating event held on Sunday, April 19, from 2 to 4 p.m., at the Montessori School of Bowling Green, 515 Sand Ridge Road. Held rain or shine, this free, family event is open to all and is filled with hands-on learning stations. The school provides an ideal backdrop for the celebration. Attendees can enjoy 14 acres of land and spend some time at the Black Swamp Preserve and Slippery Elm Trail while attending the event.

Plant a seed with Bowling Green State University (BGSU) or take home a tree from BG SONG.

Learn about dragonflies with the Bowling Green Parks and Recreation Department, trees with the city’s Urban Forester and give the Wood County Park District’s (WCPD) giant Earth ball a roll.

Attendees may also explore the city’s Electric Division, Public Works Department and Water Distribution and Wastewater Collection Division trucks to see how they help keep the environment clean and local homes powered.

Interactive games will be provided by the Wood County Solid Waste District, Northwestern Water and Sewer District and others.

The Ohio EPA, BGSU environmental students and Montessori School of Bowling Green will host informative, hands-on learning stations.

The public is invited to come early with their bikes to enjoy a slow roll along the Slippery Elm Bike Trail with the Bowling Green Bicycle Safety Commission and the WCPD’s Craig Spicer. This ride will be full of fun and nature facts. At the Portage Road intersection of the Slippery Elm Trail, there will be a bike maintenance presentation by BGSU. The ride will begin in the Montessori School parking lot at 12:30 p.m. Riders must wear a helmet.

At the celebration, there will be three 20-minute presentations.

Get to know more about plants with the WCPD at 2:15 p.m., dive deeper into water systems with Ohio EPA at 2:45 p.m., and learn more about planting trees with the city’s Urban Forester at 3:15 p.m. The sessions will be held at each organization’s respective display areas and share valuable information for all ages.

Organizers encourage the public to get involved throughout the month of April to make Earth Day every day.
