The Long-Term-Care-Ombudsman Program is unique

FEDERAL AND STATE LAW define the role of the Long-Term-Care-Ombudsman Program. In Ohio, the program is one of several programs administered by the Department of Aging. The Long-Term-Care-Ombudsman Program utilizes paid staff and volunteers to visit residents of local nursing homes and assisted livings, informing them of their rights and advocating for resolutions to any concerns they have about their care. Residents of every facility in all Ohio counties are served.

The Ombudsman Program is unique and not a duplication of other services for some key reasons:

The resident directs services The Ombudsmen serve as advocates for the residents. Ombudsmen uphold the fundamental right of a resident to exercise his or her rights as a resident of the facility and as a citizen or resident of the United States.

Services provided are voluntary and always uphold the resident’s values and preferences. The Long-Term-Care Ombudsmen do not advocate for their own interests, the interests of other state agencies, family, or healthcare providers.

The Long-Term Care Ombudsmen have a code of ethics and avoid conflicts of interest Strict provisions exist in federal and state law governing conflicts of interest. Ombudsmen evaluate, disclose, and avoid any potential conflicts of interest. This provision keeps the focus clear on the residents’ interests and not that of other parties. Ombudsmen also engage in ongoing education to stay informed of current events and best practices.

Services are provided free of charge and confidentially Because the state and federal budgets fund the work of the Long-Term-Care-Ombudsman Program, services are never billed directly. An Ombudsman for residents living in nursing homes and assisted-living facilities works to resolve problems related to residents’ health, safety, welfare, and rights.

Examples of our services include investigation and advocacy related to improper care planning, poor food quality, long call lights, missing property, or improper discharges, as well as assisting resident councils.
