Flavor-infused water

YOU’LL HAVE NO problem staying hydrated when your water looks and tastes like a summertime treat. Fruit-infused water contains all the hydration of a cool glass of water and the bright, sweet, and tangy flavors of your chosen ingredients. Lemon- infused water and lime-infused water are some of the most popular choices, but you can also infuse water with herbs like mint, sage, and basil.

The main benefit of drinking infused water comes from the simple fact that it’s water. Adequate hydration is absolutely key to being healthy. By infusing tasty flavors, many people tend to drink more water. Infusion can thus be a way to make water more appealing. Some of the specific health benefits of infused water, and water in general, include:

• Dehydration prevention—Many people regularly experience mild dehydration because of their busy schedules. However, it is important to remember that dehydration can become a serious health issue. Severe dehydration can lead to side effects like diarrhea, vomiting,

n fever, heat injury, seizures, and more.

• Weight loss—If you’re turning to sugary drinks for your flavored beverages, consider replacing them with infused water to instantly reduce the sugar/carb intake and help you achieve attainable weight loss. Water in general is also known to help with weight loss by contributing to feelings of fullness.

• Cancer treatment support—Many people undergoing cancer treatment struggle to stay sufficiently hydrated. Several cancer centers recommend infused water as a way to stay hydrated during and after cancer treatment. Infusing water with the essence of fruits, herbs, and other botanicals helps you drink plenty of liquids without the downside of excess calories, sugars, and artificial flavorings.

But before you get started making infused water, there are a few essentials that you should know to make sure that fruit- or herb-infused water is as good—and good for you—as it can be. First of all, choose organic when you can. Wash produce and rinse herbs to remove chemicals, pesticides, and other residues. Use cold filtered water, and any glass or pitcher will work. Softer fruits like citrus and strawberries can be sliced thick, while harder fruits like apples can be sliced thinner. Infuse the water at room temperature for no longer than two hours, then put into the refrigerator to prevent bacterial growth. If you don’t drink the water within 24 hours, strain out the solids and refrigerate for up to three days. Enjoy!
