THOUGH THE GROUND IS FROZEN, now is the time for the gardener’s heart and mind to grow abuzz with ideas and desires for the upcoming season.
This includes what you are going to grow and where. Do you want more flowers for pollinators and cut arrangements? Do you desire more home-grown produce and herbs for the kitchen and for sharing? Would you like a garden that sustains wildlife through the seasons? Questions such as these can be addressed now before all the distractions of the growing season are upon us.
Here at the 577 Foundation, this time of year is dedicated to planning the upcoming season’s landscape beds and vegetable and herb gardens. A key activity is creating calendars of when to start seeds in the greenhouses in March or directly outside later in the season. Garden designs are also being made for several areas, with an emphasis on flowering throughout the year and selecting plants to nourish local pollinators and wildlife.
We also use this time to make an inventory of our garden tools and see what needs cleaning, sharpening, or replacing. By making plans now, we can search for the seeds, plants, and tools needed before the bustle of the season is upon us. ✲
