THE IDEA OF THE HEALING BARN began in the mid-1990s with Nancy’s love for healing and helping those in need.
By 1999, we were building our full-service facility and by February of 2000 we were recognized as a nonprofit organization. Over the last 26 years, The Healing Barn has helped hundreds of horses. Whether it’s offering assistance to their current family to improve their living situation, networking to help find a proper home, working with the Humane Society or bringing horses in on our own, we continue to do our best in giving all equine friends a place in this world.
Mentoring young adults
In addition to helping our fourlegged friends in need, The Healing Barn has also taken on the role of educating and nurturing young adults as they step into the workforce. For the last three summers, The Healing Barn and Harbor Behavioral have teamed up to teach young women and men on work ethic, caring for the horses in various ways like cleaning stalls, keeping the barn tidy and safe, organizing, grooming and any other tasks that need to be done around the barn.
Serving our mission and tending to the needs of our animals can be a lot most days, but with love, the help of our amazing volunteers and the support from our community, we are able to continue our mission and make a difference in the lives of the abused, neglected and unwanted equine friends.
Volunteer opportunities
Every Saturday, from 9:30 a.m. until noon, the Healing Barn welcomes volunteers, ages 10 years and older, to help clean stalls, wash water buckets, brush the donkey or other horses, or, when it is hot, give the horses a bath. Besides all this fun stuff, they learn how to walk horses, and the rules of how to be around them.
Upcoming fundraiser
The Healing Barn will hold its annual Be A Horse Hero benefit on Friday, August 21, 2026, from 6:30 - 9:30 p.m., at Hilton Garden Inn, Perrysburg. Scan the QR code for tickets and more information.
It promises to be the premier fundraising event of the season, with popular Toledo-area band DC Taylor providing entertainment as guests enjoy a fun photo booth, food, cash bar, and non-alcoholic beverages. There will be live and silent auctions, as well as raffles.
13ABC’s Lissa Guyton will emcee the evening, and Connor Rose will be the auctioneer. Limited tickets are available for purchase until August 10–tickets are NOT sold at the door for this event. Visit www.thehealing barn.org for more information. ✲
