Try something new: see life through a different lens

TRYING SOMETHING NEW can awaken our curiosity, build confidence and introduce us to people and experiences we might otherwise miss.

When was the last time you stopped to notice the way sunlight fell across a familiar room, the expression on a friend’s face or the pattern formed by falling leaves? Photography encourages us to slow down and see everyday life differently. Photography is an easy, creative and social way to begin noticing what is already in front of us. Previous experience and expensive equipment are not needed. You can choose a traditional camera or your cell phone to begin capturing good images. The principles of good photography like composition, light and subject are the same regardless of the type of lens. Photography benefits: •Mindfulness: Focuses attention on the present moment.

•Creativity and self expression: Allows people to communicate emotions, ideas and personal perspectives.

•Learning and confidence: Developing a new skill creates a sense of accomplishment.

•Connection: Sharing photographs and learning with others can reduce isolation and build friendship.

Although photography can be enjoyed alone, learning alongside others adds encouragement, inspiration and a sense of community. Camera clubs can provide that community. Members range from beginner to experienced photographers. They can share knowledge and constructive feedback. You will have a chance to explore different photographers’ styles and subjects; attend outings, workshops and programs. You may develop friendships with those who share your interest. The cost is low and the value is great.

The Toledo Camera Club has brought photographers together since 1904, welcoming people with varying interests and levels of experience.

Visitors can meet members, see their work, ask questions and discover whether photography might become a rewarding new part of their lives.

Toledo Camera Club meets from September through April on the second and fourth Monday evenings, at 7 p.m., at Ohio Living Swan Creek, 5916 Cresthaven Lane, Toledo.
