Tips for getting the most from your medical visit
Prep Work
•Prioritize. Write down the concerns or symptoms you want to discuss, in order of importance, to ensure your most pressing concerns are addressed first.
• Track symptoms. If you are experiencing chronic symptoms, start tracking them well in advance of your appointment. Record when they occur, how long they last and what triggers them.
• Make a med list. Compile a list of all current prescription medications, over-the-counter medications and supplements with dosage information.
• Gather records. If you are visiting a new doctor, bring relevant past test results, records and family medical history.
Finally, remember your insurance card and photo ID.
Communication
• Don’t be shy. Communicating openly and honestly about any symptoms or concerns you are experiencing helps your doctor help you. Remember that your doctor is required to protect your privacy.
• Ask questions. Don’t be afraid to ask for clarification on any confusing medical jargon, information or instructions you don’t understand.
• Explore your options. Ask your doctor about the risks and side effects of any treatment options they are recommending, as well as available alternatives.
• Summarize. Repeat the information you are hearing back to your doctor. This will help you absorb it, and also help ensure you understood it correctly. ✲
