Empowering independence: St. Clare Commons paves the way for stronger senior living

AS WE AGE, maintaining strength is crucial for preserving independence and ensuring a high quality of life. St. Clare Commons, a part of CHI Living Communities, recognizes this need and offers a diverse array of programs and activities aimed at helping seniors stay strong and vibrant. By focusing on physical wellness, social engagement, and educational opportunities, St. Clare Commons provides a holistic approach to senior living.

Maintaining strength as you age comes with numerous benefits, including the ability to pick up small grandchildren, get up unassisted after a fall, carry groceries, walk distances, and reach items on top shelves. These abilities are crucial for enjoying retirement and maintaining independence. Without regular attention to health and dexterity, weakness and diseases causing limited movement can gradually set in.

Strength-training is key to preserving muscle tissue, maintaining bone health, improving mobility, and increasing balance and coordination. According to Nurse Dianne McFarland, Vice President of Clinical Services at CHI Living Communities, you don’t need an expensive gym membership or personal trainer to start strength-training. “Be careful, however, not to dive into exercise too quickly if you don’t already have a workout routine,” McFarland advises.

Here are some simple exercises to help build strength gradually:

• Bodyweight squats: Using a chair for support, sit down and stand up several times without using the chair arms. Breathe in as you squat and breathe out as you push up out of the chair.

• Wall pressups: Stand about a foot away from a wall and press against it using your palms, with hands extended at shoulder height. Alternatively, knee push-ups from the floor can strengthen your core.

• Walking: Walking is a great full-body workout that uses muscles, improves balance, and boosts heart health. During warmer months, consider walking in air-conditioned spaces like malls or large stores. “It’s never too late in life to start strength-training,” McFarland states. “Just be sure you check with your healthcare provider first before starting any new exercise routine.”

At St. Clare Commons, wellness is a cornerstone of its philosophy. The community offers a wide array of programs tailored to meet the needs of older adults, from cardio drumming and bowling to nature park visits and walking. Social engagement is equally important for maintaining independence and well-being. St. Clare Commons fosters a vibrant community with regular social events, group activities, and outings that provide opportunities for residents to build meaningful connections. Activities like bingo, card games, movie nights, and musical performances not only entertain but also stimulate cognitive functions and encourage creativity.

Educational programs keep residents’ minds sharp and engaged. Guest lectures, workshops, and discussion groups cover a broad range of topics, ensuring that residents remain intellectually stimulated and connected to the world around them.

One of the defining features of St. Clare Commons is its supportive and caring environment. Personalized care plans ensure that each individual’s unique needs and preferences are met, providing a sense of security and peace of mind.
