A season of kindness at St. Clare Commons

NESTLED ON 55 ACRES OF SERENE COUNTRYSIDE next to St. John XXIII Catholic Community, St. Clare Commons offers more than senior living—it’s a place where kindness and connection shape everyday life. As a part of CHI Living Communities, St. Clare Commons provides a range of care options, from skilled nursing and rehabilitation to memory care, assisted living, and independent living, all guided by the Franciscan tradition of compassion.

Kindness during the holiday season As the holiday season unfolds, the spirit of kindness fills the air at St. Clare Commons. This time of year is an opportunity to celebrate generosity, connection, and the warmth of community. Residents and staff come together to share in festive traditions that highlight the simple joys of human kindness.

Lola Alokan, Director of Mission Integration and Spiritual Care, reflects on the season’s importance: “The holidays are a time to strengthen our commitment to empathy and compassion. It’s about creating an environment where everyone feels seen and valued, especially as we gather to celebrate together.”

The power of humankindness At St. Clare Commons, the mission goes beyond providing care—it’s about nurturing the whole person. “Hello humankindness” is more than our tagline; it’s a way of life that influences how the community interacts daily. It’s seen in shared laughter during social gatherings, support in moments of need, and the joy of friendships formed in the heart of the community. The staff aims to create a welcoming space where seniors feel connected, respected, and part of something larger.

“We’re here to provide more than just care,” says Executive Director Sarah Marsh. “We’re here to offer companionship, dignity, and a sense of belonging. We want our residents to feel truly at home.”

Creating community every day Daily life here reflects the value of human connection, whether it’s a friendly chat over coffee, a shared meal, or participating in meaningful activities that inspire joy. The landscape is full of garden spaces and gathering spots designed to foster interaction and support well-being. Residents come together for regular events—weekly happy hours, spiritual services, and holiday celebration— making every day an opportunity to connect.

The emphasis on holistic care reflects the philosophy that healing encompasses body, mind, and spirit. This approach is especially meaningful during the holidays, a time when the importance of community, warmth, and human kindness is felt deeply.

“Kindness isn’t just an action—it’s a way of being,” Marsh explains. “Our goal is to make sure everyone here, from residents to families to staff, feels supported and cared for, not only during the holidays but every day. We recently celebrated World Kindness Day on November 13, setting the tone for a season of generosity and connection. Residents and staff come together to share in celebrations that remind us of the power of simple human gestures.”

Carrying kindness into the new year As the holiday season ends, the spirit of “Hello humankindness” will continue to guide the community. The new year will bring new opportunities for residents to engage, stay active, and pursue their passions. The staff’s commitment to compassionate care remains unwavering, ensuring that each person feels connected, respected, and valued.

At St. Clare Commons, kindness is not confined to the holiday season— it’s a daily practice, woven into the fabric of life. The power of human connection shines through, making the community a place of warmth and belonging.
