June is for survivors
WHAT DOES BEING A CANCER SURVIVOR MEAN? When does one’s “survivorship” begin? According to the National Cancer Institute, one is a survivor the moment they are diagnosed. Being a cancer survivor means that you are living in spite of a cancer diagnosis. The observance of Cancer Survivor Month every June is meant to celebrate life and encourage those who are still battling cancer.
Thanks to advances in treatment, people with cancer are living much longer. Gone are the days when a cancer diagnosis was a death sentence. According to the American Association of Cancer Research, in the United States alone, over 16.9 million people are living with cancer. Because of the improved screening processes, cancer is also being caught earlier, which helps to increase lifespan.
Every survivorship experience is unique, but each one should be celebrated. Let’s all recognize those we know who are surviving…in spite of cancer!
