The Ability Center seeks volunteers for Assistance Dog Program

GIVING OF YOUR TIME to a local organization is a great way to build community. The Ability Center’s Assistance Dog Program is searching for volunteers. Opportunities involve working with dogs training to become assistance dogs that will one day help an individual with a disability become more independent and thrive in the community. The Assistance Dog Program helps individuals with disabilities achieve greater independence by training and placing service and therapy dogs to assist with the individual’s daily needs.

Puppy Raiser Volunteers play an important role in our training, beginning with our puppies at 10 weeks old, and provide a safe home for the puppy for 10 weeks. Fosters house, train, and nurture our service dogs in training from 5-9 months of age up to two years. They provide training at home, during outings, and in group training classes. They work closely with The Ability Center and are responsible for the complete care of the dog.

Melissa Zornow, Ability Center foster, shares, “I believe in the power of dogs to make a change in people’s lives. To give them freedom and opportunities they may not have had before is empowering.”
