CAREGIVERS,WHETHERTHEY’RE MEDICAL professional or informal caregivers like family members, are integral components of many health care teams.
Caregivers work tirelessly for the benefit of a person in need, although the job often proves humbling and even overwhelming.
Informal caregivers, including family members and friends who pitch in, generally do not get the attention they deserve. It is important for them to know their efforts are appreciated. Individuals can engage in various behaviors to express their gratitude to caregivers.
Say “Thank you”
One of the easiest ways to show appreciation to caregivers is to thank them outright. A simple “thank you” can transform a person’s day in an instant.
Knowing they are appreciated may help them stay motivated when the going gets a little tough.
Say it with food
Caregiving requires sacrifice. That means certain things may be put on the back burner, such as time allotted to prepare home-cooked meals. Give thanks with some delicious meals that are ready to go and can be easily heated up. If cooking is not your thing, then you can offer gift cards to a favorite restaurant or a gift basket full of delicious treats.
Write a heartfelt note
Offer a card thanking the caregiver on your own behalf and on behalf of person who is on the receiving end of the care.
Many times families help out by rotating caregivers if a person needs around-the-clock care. That can mean adult children, siblings, cousins and others will take turns sitting in the caregiver seat. Personally thank all of the people who lend a hand with notes that explain how they are offering invaluable assistance.
Offer a soothing gift
A caregiver may enjoy relaxationbased gifts such as a massage therapy appointment, spa pedicure, hair cut, or another type of pampering.
Pitch in
Whenever possible, lighten the load of the caregiver by offering as much assistance as you can. Many hands can make light work of any situation.
